Willem II’s perfect start to 2019 is over after they were defeated 2-1 by Groningen in Tilburg.

The home side went into the tie on the back of three straight wins and started with new signing Alexander Isak up front for the first time.

However, it was Groningen who took the initiative from the start and they took the lead after half an hour when Django Warmerdam fired an excellent strike past Timo Wellenreuther.

Two minutes later it was 2-0 through Kaj Sierhuis, who netted his first Eredivisie goal after the ball bobbled into his path in the box.

Willem II improved after the break and they pulled one back when Marios Vrousai struck low into the bottom corner. The hosts went looking for an equaliser but Isak saw an effort cleared off the line before the forward was denied by Sergio Padt.

The Groningen goalkeeper then assured his sides victory late on with an excellent save to deny Vrousai.

The victory moves Groningen up to 12th in the table while Willem II are 9th.
