Before the game the home crowd sang an emotional You’ll never walk Alone for their former player and current assistant Antoine van der Linden, who sadly lost his six-year-old daughter last week.
When the game got underway, Groningen were on top and went close through Tom van de Looi who shot wide from a promising position. On 25 minutes the hosts took the lead as Ryan Thomas diverted a Tom van Weert cross into his own net.
Groningen could have been further in front before the break but Mimoun Mahi’s effort came back off the crossbar.
In the second half, PEC Zwolle came into the game and hit the bar through Thomas, while Mustafa Saymak also went close. However, Groningen sealed their win in the last minute as Adjin Hrustic jinked past his marker in the box before seeing his shot deflected into the net.
Its the first win of 2018 for Groningen and they move up to 13th while PEC Zwolle stay 7th.
