With Arjen Robben watching from the crowd, Groningen took the lead after only eight minutes with Django Warmerdam stealing the ball off Sander van de Streek before slotting his shot into the net.
Despite having the lead it was Utrecht who dominated the game and they were unlucky not to find an equaliser with Jean-Cristophe Bahebeck denied several times by Sergio Padt while both Willem Janssen and Dario Dumic hit the woodwork.
Five minutes before the break, Groningen doubled their lead against the run of play through Jesper Drost, who finished off a fine counter attack.
Juninho Bacuna hit the bar early in the second half for Groningen before Utrecht pulled one back on 64 minutes through Bahebeck. Utrecht poured forward looking for an equaliser, but Padt came to Groningen’s rescue to ensure they get their first win of the campaign.
