Groningen are officially safe from relegation after earning a 1-1 draw at Utrecht.

Utrecht went into the game unable to raise above their fourth place standings, while Groningen needed at least a point to be officially free from relegation.

After only eight minutes the hosts had the lead with Willem Janssen finding the net from close range after Yassin Ayoub headed the ball into his path.

Utrecht went in search for a second before the break but Gyrano Kerk passed up two good chances, while Sergio Padt saved well from Sander van de Streek.

After the break, Utrecht failed to kill the game and 17 minutes from time, Mark van der Maarel brought down Tom van Weert to gift Groningen a penalty. Van Weert netted the spot kick himself to earn the visitors a point.

Groningen are now 13th in the table while Utrecht remain fifth. Worryingly for Utrecht they have now gone five games without a win.
