Vitesse knocked out Ajax 4-0 in the last round and they had the better of a scrappy first half with Sergio Padt having to make good saves from Davy Propper and Uros Djurdjevic, while the striker also had a goal ruled out for handball.
Groningen barely created any chances, but the match was turned in their favour just after the hour when Guram Kashia handled Michael de Leeuw’s header, earning himself a red card and the home side a penalty. Eloy Room kept out De Leeuw’s spot kick but Tjarron Chery was on hand to stab in the rebound.
From that point the floodgates opened with De Leeuw finishing a great pass from Jarchinio Antonia on 67 minutes, before Yoell van Nieff smashed an unstoppable curling shot into the top corner eight minutes later to make it 3-0. With ten minutes left Maikel Kieftenbeld hammered in the fourth from the edge of the box to send Groningen into the last four.
