Groningen have strengthened their attack for next season with the signing of Tom van Weert on a free transfer.

weert gronThe 25-year-old was top scorer for Excelsior last season, with eleven goals in 31 league games, but decided to leave Rotterdam at the end of the campaign with his contract expiring.

Groningen have reacted quickly to snap up the striker, who has signed a three-year deal at the Euroborg. Van Weert will replace Michael de Leeuw who left for Chicago fire at the end of the season, and will look to add goals to a side that has struggled to find a regular scorer in the past few years.

Groningen technical director Peter Jeltema said on the club website. ‘Van Weert is a type of striker that we can use. He is our desired gain for the attack. There were more rivals in the field for him, but Van Weert wanted to join Groningen and we are very happy. “
