The 21-year-old, who can play across the defence or in midfield has signed a three-year-contract with Groningen after they agreed a fee with Ajax.

Warmerdam came through the Ajax academy but failed to reach the first team and decided to leave on loan to PEC Zwolle last summer. Under Ron Jans the youngster has impressed, scoring four times in 24 Eredivisie matches.

Warmerdam told the official Groningen website, “FC Groningen for me is the perfect next step in my career.”

Groningen have now signed two players already for next season with Heracles defender Mike te Wierik already agreeing to join.
