Groningen came away from Sparta Rotterdam with a 2-1 victory.

Groningen started with Daishawn Redan up front for the first time since the youngster joined on loan from Hertha Berlin.

It was the hosts who began brightly, though, with Mike Te Wierik bringing down Jeffry Fortes in the box. Mohamed Rayhi took the spot kick but Sergio Padt kept it out of his goal.

In the 22nd minute, Joel Asoro raced in on goal and put an excellent strike into the top corner to give Groningen the lead. Ten minutes later, Ramon Pascal Lundqvist made it 2-0 with a low finish from Deyovaisio Zeefuik’s cross.

The first half stoppage time lasted over ten minutes due to a nasty clash of heads between Dante Rigo and Bart Vriends. Rigo had to be taken off on a stretcher after feeling dizzy.

Four minutes into the second half, Sparta were awarded a second penalty after another foul by Te Wierik. This time, Rayhi found the net to make it 2-1.

There was to be no equaliser for the hosts as Padt kept them out to seal the three points for Groningen, who rises to seventh. Sparta are 11th.
