A last minute Mo El Hankouri goal sealed a 3-2 win for Groningen against struggling Willem II.

Willem II went into the game in 17th spot and in desperate need of some points, while Groningen are battling for a European playoff place.

The first half was a dull affair with neither side able to find the net. Groningen lost Patrick Joosten to an injury and he was replaced by Mo El Hankouri. Five minutes into the second half, the substitute opened the scoring.

Jørgen Strand Larsen thought he had made it 2-0 but his overhead kick was ruled out for offside. Willem II then went down the other end and Che Nunnely made it 1-1.

In the 65th minute, Kwasi Wriedt had a goal disallowed before Willem II did take the lead through a Wessel Dammers own-goal. The lead only lasted five minutes before Ko Itakura equalised.

Mats Köhlert then had the ball in the net for Willem II but again VAR intervened and it was ruled out for offside. Then in the third minute of injury time, Alessio Da Cruz broke through and set up El Hankouri to net the winning goal.

The victory means Groningen moves up to sixth while Willem II remain in deep trouble.
