Advocaat will become the national team manager for the third time with Ruud Gullit as his assistant. They will finish the current World Cup 2018 qualifying campaign and should the Netherlands qualify they will also manage at the tournament.

Van Breukelen said on the appointment, which comes just months after Advocaat left his role as an assistant with Oranje to take charge of Fenerbahce, “We are in a situation where we have to put sentiment to one side and focus on the quality the manager Dick Advocaat has. He has no release clause in his contract.”

Van Breukelen also spoke about the criticism he had received in terms of the inept process of finding a new national team manager and confirmed he would review his position in the KNVB, “The people around me still appear to have a lot of confidence in me. The things that I do are not to win popularity but to help the Dutch national team back to the place where we all want to be.”
