After the failure of the national team to qualify for Euro 2016 in France pressure was applied by the union of Dutch football mangers for the role to be filled.
Upon his appointment van Breukelen stated the following, “When I was first contacted by Bert van Oostveen my first question was do we need a technical director as I have read otherwise he stated since the 10 point plan has been released we feel the need to appoint one ” .
“This 10 point plan has not come out of thin air we have gone abroad and Jelle Goes with his people and conducted many interviews and you see that we are physically and mentally a long way behind our counterparts”.
“I think that in regards of those two elements we the KNVB must work together with the clubs to look at how we can let players grow and I feel that the clubs must facilitate and I see the KNVB as a service organisation on the basis of football in terms of supplying everything they need in order to become successful
“This is a challenging project in which a blueprint has been created for the future and I look forward to contributing to it and achieving the goals that have been set “.
Hans van Breukelen won 73 caps for the Netherlands and was part of the triumphant Dutch national team that won the European Championships in 1988 in Germany.
