breukelen sdGullit was confirmed to be in talks with the KNVB last week as a possible replacement for Dick Advocaat, but those talks have now broken down.

Van Breukelen said, ”I want to make it clear that the decision not to appoint Ruud Gullit had nothing to do with money but Ruud wanted certain assurances which I as technical director of the KNVB could not give him. He wanted a clause in his contract which was the same as what Dick Advocaat had and due to this clause we lost Dick to Fenerbahce and therefore we are not going to add the same clause again to a potential new assistant manager.

“Also Ruud wanted that if there were ever any changes within the technical staff that he would be promoted from within and these are assurances that I cannot give. We have stated as a national football association that we do not give assurances in the form of clauses or promotions within due to the fact of we are wishing to add to our current technical staff and it would be very strange if there were any eventual changes in the technical staff to promote that person from within.

”We were prepared to let Ruud continue with his current commitments and only when the national team play would he have joined up with the group. He would have not been part of our scouting network and regular meetings”.
