With Martin Odegaard handed his first start in the league, Heerenveen dominated the first half but failed to take their considerable chances. Sam Larsson fired wide, while Reza Ghoochannejhad, who scored a hat-trick against PSV last weekend, could only head straight at Sergio Padt. Before the break Groningen could have snatched the lead but Mimoun Mahi just couldn’t finish a pass from Alexander Sorloth.
In the second half the game rather fizzled out with the visitors going closest to taking all three points as Kasper Larsen headed a corner wide while Bryan Linssen went close with two long-range efforts.
The draw means Heerenveen stay fourth while Groningen are in ninth.
