Heerenveen went into the game on the back of a disappointing cup defeat to Roda JC, but they were unbeaten in five league matches before that, and they started the match on top. The home side controlled the possession from the start, but they could not create any great chances, and it was PSV who should have taken the lead on 27 minutes when Florian Jozefzoon was found in space on the edge of the box, but the winger’s shot was pushed wide by Kristoffer Nordfeldt.
On 33 minutes Jozefzoon was played through on goal, but Stefano Marzo pulled him down just outside the box, and the referee had no choice but to show the Heerenveen right back a straight red card. With the extra man PSV took control of the match, but their final ball in and around the box was poor, and Heerenveen defended brilliantly to constantly break down attacks from the away side, who clearly missed the injured Luuk de Jong up front.
PSV were reduced to ten men themselves on 68 minutes as Joshua Brenet was shown a straight red for a late challenge on Mark Uth. The red rekindled Heerenveen’s attacking spirit and after a swift counter attack Daley Sinkgraven was teed up on the edge of the box to prod the ball into the top corner for the opening goal.
There was to be no response from the league leaders, who were defeated in the Abe Lenstra for the third season running, and are now only ahead of Ajax and PEC Zwolle on goal difference. Heerenveen keep up their excellent start to the season, and they climb to 4th, and are only a point behind the top three.
Herenveen, are becoming a bogey for PSV. Disapointing, alot is expected from Cocus team, however without Depay and De Jong they looked as toothless as they were last season.
