Heerenveen are off to a winning start in the Eredivisie after a 3-1 win over newly promoted De Graafschap.

hee de graafHeerenveen were on the front foot from the start, with new signing Mitchell te Vrede passing up two good opportunities in the opening 15 minutes, while Luciano Slagveer sent an effort just over the bar.

Finally after 23 minutes the home side made the breakthrough as Simon Thern nicked the ball off De Graafschap midfielder Lion Kaak before slotting past goalkeeper Hidde Jurjus. It was 2-0 ten minutes later as Te Vrede converted Slagveer’s cross from close range.

Just before the break De Graafschap had a great chance to get back into the game, but after capitalising on an error from Lukas Bijker, Nathan Kabasele couldn’t beat Erwin Mulder when one on one with the goalkeeper.

Ten minutes into the second half Heerenveen added a third as Thern looped a header past Jurjus, but the home side then took their foot off the gas and allowed De Graafschap room to play.

Young midfielder Dean Koolhof fired a long range effort off the base of the post, before substitute Vincent Vermeij sent a header just over and Alexander Bannick had a volley stopped on the line by Mulder. Eventually the away side got the goal their second half performance deserved as Vermeij powered a header past Mulder on 82 minutes.

There was to be no comeback though as Heerenveen comfortably saw out the game to start their season with a win.
