After three months without a victory at the Abe Lenstra Stadion, Heerenveen recorded a deserved 4-2 victory over AZ Alkmaar.

heeren az vanThe home side took the ascendancy from the beginning and took the lead in fortunate circumstances on nine minutes as Stefan Marzo’s cross was turned into his own net by Ron Vlaar.

The veteran AZ defender looked far from secure in the early stages and soon after the opener Jerry st Juste should have made it 2-0 when he got goalside of Vlaar, but could only fire wide. Arbar Zeneli and Mitchell Te Vrede both missed good chances before the break, but minutes into the second half Joey van den Berg eventually made it 2-0 with a lovely finish.

Substitute Dabney Dos Santos pulled one back for AZ Alkmaar with twelve minutes to go, as the winger finished at the back post from Robert Muhren’s flick. However, any chance of a comeback was swiftly ended by Heerenveen who added a third through Zeneli on 84 minutes, and Luciano Slagveer then sealed the victory with a powerful finish.

In injury time Vincent Janssen grabbed his 21st goal of the season from close range, but that proved to be nothing more than a consolation.

AZ drop to sixth in the table, while Heerenveen are 11th.
