The Eredivisie 2022/23 season got underway with Heerenveen and Sparta Rotterdam playing out a boring 0-0 draw.

Both sides went into the new season with optimism with Kees van Wonderen’s Heerenveen side lining up with the partnership of Sydney van Hooijdonk and Amin Sarr which impressed at the end of last season. Sparta Rotterdam signed 12 new players this summer, including Jonathan De Guzman, who went straight into the line-up.
The first half was sleep-inducing with the only chance coming in the 40th minute as Nick Olij was forced into a save to deny Heerenveen’s Mats Kohlert.
Olij denied Van Hooijdonk in the second half, while the closest Sparta came was a Vito van Crooy strike over the bar with fifteen minutes left.
The game ended goalless meaning both sides start the campaign with a point each.

A truly awful opening game in a season that I hope delivers consistent excitement. Perhaps the vast turn-over of players, especially at Sparta, might be the reason why? However there were enough decent players on the pitch, especially for Herenveen, to do a lot better….
