The Eredivisie season got underway with Heerenveen defeating Willem II 2-0 in the Abe Lenstra Stadion.

Heerenveen had a poor pre-season but had optimism heading into the season after making several new signings. Paweł Bochniewicz and Oliver Batista Meier both started along with 18-year-old winger Arjen van de Heide. Just before the start, Mitchell van Bergen was ruled out and youngster Couhaib Driouech was drafted in for his debut.

Willem II was without some key players and had Miquel Nelom playing at centre-back. However, new left-back Derrick Kohn started for his debut along with summer signing Robbin Ruiter.

Willem II had the early share of possession but in the 22nd minute, Lucas Woudenberg played a one-two with Van de Heide before slotting past Ruiter to make it 1-0.

Early in the second half, Willem II had the ball in the net via Vangelis Pavlidis but the Greek forward was offside. In the 53rd minute, Henk Veerman should have made it 2-0 but he took an extra touch when in on goal and Ruiter was allowed to smother the ball.

With fifteen minutes left, Heerenveen did double their lead as Bochniewicz headed in for a goal on his debut. It could have been more for the hosts but Ruiter prevented both Sieben Dewaele and Hamdi Akujobi with a fine double save.

A great start to the season for Heerenveen, while Willem II must now pick themselves up for their Europa League qualifier against Progres on Wednesday.
