Heerenveen went into the game on a bad run which has seen them winless in the league since the 8th of December.
VVV set up very defensively in Friesland and frustrated the hosts in the first half. Mitchell van Bergen did get one big chance but fired wide.
Ten minutes into the second half, Heerenveen defender Ibrahim Dresevic conceded a very clumsy penalty. Johnatan Opoku made no mistake from the spot to put VVV in front.
In the 69th minute, Heerenveen equalised when Sheral Floranus found the net after substitute striker Runar Espejord headed the ball across goal.
Heerenveen came closest to finding a winner before the end but Thorsten Kirschbaum denied Floranus, who took aim at goal after a short corner.
The point means Heerenveen now sits 10th while VVV are 16th.
