PEC Zwolle’s defeat at FC Twente earlier on Tuesday opened up the opportunity for Heerenveen or ADO Den Haag to move into the top seven.
The first half was short of highlights as Heerenveen dominated possession but failed to find a way through an organised ADO Den Haag defence.
In the 53rd minute, the deadlock was broken by the hosts with Pelle van Amesfoort’s cross headed into the net by Marco Rojas.
ADO Den Haag then made a double change with Elson Hooi and Thijmen Goppel making way for Erik Falkenburg and Melvin Lorenzen. However, it didn’t work and 15 minutes from time, Rojas sealed the victory with a fine finish after being set up by Arber Zeneli.
The result means Heerenveen climb up to sixth in the table with two games left, while ADO Den Haag remain ninth.
