Heracles Almelo returned to second place in the table after a 2-0 win over Heerenveen on Friday.

bel hassanThe excellent run of five wins in a row for Heracles was ended last week by AZ Alkmaar, but John Stegeman’s side proved that was just a blip as they returned to winning ways against Heerenveen.

It was the visitors who made a stronger start to the match, but goalkeeper Bram Castro was in good form to keep out Henk Veerman and then the rebound from Simon Thern.

Heracles seemed to be missing suspended top scorer Oussama Tannane, but ten minutes before the break Iliass Bel Hassani fired a fierce strike past Erwin Mulder to put the hosts ahead.

Heerenveen threw on Luka Zahovic and the fit again Mitchel te Vrede for the second half, but neither could inspire their side to a comeback. After Erwin Mulder tipped a Jaroslav Navratil against the crossbar, Wout Weghorst sealed Heracles win with a header.

Heracles move above Feyenoord and into second, while for the third game in a row Heerenveen failed to score and they now remain 12th.
