PSV were excellent midweek in their shock 2-1 win over Manchester United, and they seemed to be continuing their good form in Almelo as Luuk de Jong headed a Maxime Lestienne free kick into the net after only 87 seconds.
However Heracles fought back with Wout Weghorst striking the post after ten minutes the first warning sign for Phillip Cocu’s side. On 39 minutes Heracles did find their leveler with Mark-Jan Fledderus firing a fierce strike past Jeroen Zoet from outside the box, and just before the break the hosts stunned the champions by taking the lead through Thomas Bruns, who found the bottom corner with a strike from distance.
Hector Moreno, who hit the headlines midweek for his goal and tackle on Luke Shaw, should have equalised in the second half, but his tame header from Gaston Pereiro’s cross was straight at Bram Castro. This proved to be the best chance for PSV as Heracles held on to take all three points.
Heracles are now temporarily top of the table after an excellent start to the season, while PSV now sit 5th after their first loss of the campaign.
