Heracles Almelo stopped their run of four straight defeats with a 3-1 win over Cambuur.

heracles alcAfter an excellent start to the season, Heracles Almelo’s surprise bid for a top three finish has gone of the rails recently with four straight losses, including the 5-0 loss at home to Roda JC.

It seemed it was going to be another frustrating evening for the hosts when Cambuur took the lead through Jack Byrne on 32 minutes. The on-loan Manchester City midfielder found the net from just outside the box with a lovely strike.

Wout Weghorst had hit the post for Heracles in the first half, but the striker found the equaliser on 49 minutes. Leonard Nienhuis stopped Weghorst’s first strike, but he followed up to net the rebound, which broke Heracles goal drought which had lasted 606 minutes.

The equaliser galvanised Heracles and they took the lead in the 77th minute as Robin Gosens volleyed the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. Illias Bel Hassani then sealed victory in injury time with a fierce strike into the top corner.

Heracles move to sixth after the win, while Cambuur slip to the bottom after De Graafschap’s win on Friday.
