Heerenveen’s chances of snatching a European playoff spot seem to be over after they went down 2-1 at Heracles Almelo.

Johnny Jansen’s reign as Heerenveen interim boss began with a 1-1 draw at home to Groningen last weekend. In his second match he watched his side dominate but fall to defeat due to several missed chances.

Sam Lammers and Kik Pierie both went close before Pelle van Amersfoort finally found the net. However, his goal was disallowed due to a foul in the build-up.

Four minutes later, Brandley Kuwas fired Heracles ahead from the penalty spot after he was fouled by Yuki Kobayashi. Heerenveen were then awarded a penalty themselves and Lammers deservedly equalised.

Before the break, Heerenveen should have been in front but Ben Rienstra fired an excellent chance straight at goalkeeper Janis Blaswich.

Heerenveen were the better side after the break but Lammers, Doke Schmidt and Reinstra all passed up opportunities to make it 2-1. Heracles were second best but when they got an opportunity in the 73rd minute they took it. Adrian Dalmau fired past Warner Hahn to make it 2-1.

Heerenveen pushed for an equaliser before the end but Heracles held on for a win.

Heracles are now fifth while Heerenveen are 10th and now seven points off eighth place, which could mean a playoff spot.
