Leading 2-1 from the first leg Groningen seemed to seal their place in the final when Albert Rusnak gave them the lead on 63 minutes. The midfielder finished off a counter-attack attack to put his side up 3-1.
Heracles had missed several clear-cut chances throughout the game, but they gave themselves hope on 82 minutes when Ramon Zomer equalised. Then in injury time, Heracles took the game into extra time with Paul Gladon heading in from close range.
After 111 minutes Heracles made it 3-1 through Wout Weghorst and after that moment Groningen fell apart. Brahim Darri squeezed a shot past Sergio Padt to make it 4-1 and then Joel Pelupessy added a fifth late on with a fantastic strike into the top corner.
Heracles now move onto the play-off final where they will meet either Utrecht or PEC Zwolle for a place in the Europa League.
