Hiddink, who was a adviser to PSV Eindhoven last season has a keen interest in the development of the 20-year-old PSV winger, who has been tipped to become one of the most talented players of his generation.
However during Netherlands defeat to Mexico last November Depay was criticised after a poor performances, which saw him subbed after the hour mark by Hiddink. The PSV top scorer was then left out for the 6-0 win over Latvia.
Speaking to Helden magazine, Hiddink said Depay should look to the career of Arjen Robben for inspiration and overcome any setbacks to become a better player.
Hiddink said, “Depay is a talent but he still has much to learn. Robben is a good example. If Memphis wants to get far as him, he must first overcome setbacks.”
