Netherlands now sit six points off the top at the halfway stage in the group, and face a battle to get into the top two automatic qualification places for the European Championships when they play their next competitive game with Latvia in June.

Speaking to NOS after the match, Guus Hiddink was defiant over his position, but admitted he doesn’t know how to get Netherlands back to their best.

Hiddink said, “Of course I can get this team back to its best, but at this moment I don’t know how yet.

“It wasn’t a good game from us, but I’m satisfied with the result. In the end, this can be a very important draw.

“We shouldn’t talk too big about ourselves, because we are not one of the top teams in Europe. The third place at the World Cup in Brazil was fantastic, but you have to look through that result. Look at the reality.”
