Despite having 70% possession against the Turks on Saturday, Netherlands failed to create any clear cut chances, and relied on a deflected Klaas jan Huntelaar goal in the 92nd minute to earn a point.
Netherlands now sit six points off the top at the halfway stage in the group, and face a battle to get into the top two automatic qualification places for the European Championships when they play their next competitive game with Latvia in June.
Speaking to NOS after the match, Guus Hiddink was defiant over his position, but admitted he doesn’t know how to get Netherlands back to their best.
Hiddink said, “Of course I can get this team back to its best, but at this moment I don’t know how yet.
“It wasn’t a good game from us, but I’m satisfied with the result. In the end, this can be a very important draw.
“We shouldn’t talk too big about ourselves, because we are not one of the top teams in Europe. The third place at the World Cup in Brazil was fantastic, but you have to look through that result. Look at the reality.”
Pffffft. “WE ARE NOT ONE OF THE TOP TEAMS IN EUROPE”…of course they are !!!!! With all due respect it is Hiddink that is no longer one of the top coaches in Europe. His judgement and insight is poor.. Take his comments during the world cup for example..he underestimates even low opponents like when he said “Australia will not even go close to scoring a goal against Netherlands” how very wrong was he….Australia scored twice and nearly won the game..Of course Netherlands is 1000 times better than Australia but to underestimate them like he did is just an example of how out of touch and arrogant he is. Of course as an international coach you need to be a bit arrogant..but his high degree of arrogance shows how out of touch he is with what needs to be done for the Dutch boys…to give them harmony, confidence. To improve the chemistry of the team and bring them to the top. Where they deserve to be…On the Top of European football…There is no reason why they cannot be… They have the players to beat anyone when they have a good day…By his own admission Hiddink does not know what to do !!!! So….resign Hiddink…Let Danny Blind step up and have his turn. Danny Blind has done his time as an assistant and is ready for the next step. He supported Van Gaal very well during the world cup, he knows the team and surely he is ready to Manage Holland right away…!!! Go Danny Blind…Hup Holland Hup !!!
I agree with you they are one of the best teams in Europe but he is giving silly excuses. They have great Dutch coaches koeman de Boer Cocou Blind new blood top urgent or I will miss my favorite team in 2016 and for sure I won’t watched
Time for a new coach. No if’s an’s or but’s about it. There is a ton of good young Dutch talent and he has no idea how to use it. Yes Robben and RVP were out, so what? The depth at midfield and at defense is amazing. Use it! If Guus can’t get someone that will.
