The Schalke forward netted his 4oth and 41st goals for Netherlands in the tie on Friday with two headers, and could have added another, but his shot that struck Memphis Depay and ended up in the net was credited to the winger.
Huntelaar now moves above Patrick Kluivert in the all time scoring list and into second behind Robin van Persie, who currently has 49 goals for the Oranje.
The 31-year-old’s double also makes him the second most prolific scorer ever for Netherlands, behind Beb Bakhuys, who represented the Oranje between 1928 and 1937. Bakhuys’s averaged a goal every 74 minutes after netting 28 times for the national team in 2070 minutes, while Huntelaar now averages a goal every 98 minutes.
In contrast Van Persie averages a goal every 145 minutes, Johan Cruyff a goal every 130 minutes, and Arjen Robben a goal every 237.
