Back in January 2009, Huntelaar made his debut for Real Madrid in a clash with Villarreal, but then he had to wait a month to once again start for the Spanish giants.
Huntelaar then appeared on the front cover of Spanish newspaper AS around the time of his second start against Sporting Gijon with the headline, “I want to leave Real Madrid.”
The article surprised the Dutch international, who had never spoken to the newspaper or journalist, who wrote the piece.
It has now been revealed by Marca that Huntelaar had joked, “If it continues like this, I’m leaving,” during a dinner meeting with his fellow Dutch teammates at Real Madrid during the time. Arjen Robben, Royston Drenthe, Wesley Sneijder and Rafael van der Vaart. Ruud van Nistelrooy was at the club, but not at the meeting.
“Someone betrayed me and I don’t know why”, Huntelaar told Marca journalist Juan Ignacio Garcia-Ochoa, who was asked by the striker later about the incident.
“Juan, who do you think it was?” he asked the journalist.”Because in that dinner, there was only Robben, Sneijder, Van der Vaart, Drenthe and me. And why did they do it? It was a throwaway comment that you make, between friends, you’re a bit annoyed and you say it. But I’d signed for six years, I wasn’t going to leave after one bad month.
“But the worst thing was that the dinner was at eight o’clock in the evening and the story came out the next day!”
Huntelaar narrowed down the suspects to two people and has not yet revealed to anyone who it was.
