Huntelaar has been out since August after suffering an injury in Schalke’s 4-0 defeat to Wolfsburg, where he collided with the oppositions goalkeeper.
The 30 year old returned to training on Monday, but again suffered damage to the same knee, and was forced to leave the session early.
Now Huntelaar has confirmed on his twitter account that he will undergo surgery again, and will be forced out of action for the next three to four months.
His statement read, “It’s been difficult, but I’ve decided to undergo surgery. Recovery time will be 3 to 4 months. It’s though, but a necessary step.”
This will come as a huge blow to Schalke’s hopes of progressing in the Champions League, but also to Huntelaar’s chances of reaching next summers World Cup.
If the surgery is a success and recovery goes well, Huntelaar could return in February, giving the striker four months to prove to national team coach Louis van Gaal that he is fit enough to star in Brazil next summer.
