The striker suffered a knee injury in training just before the local derby with Borussia Dortmund and has missed the last five weeks of action. Huntelaar was expected to return before the end of the year, but that is now not possible.
Schalke’s technical director Axel Schuster said on the issue, “The ligament is torn in a bad way for the healing process. It looks like the comeback is now January.”
The setback could have an impact on Huntelaar’s future at Schalke with the striker reportedly having a clause in his contract stating he must play at least half of the club’s games to trigger an automatic contract extension. With Huntelaar only on nine appearances so far that looks unlikely, which means he could be a free agent this summer, possibly paving the way for a move to Ajax.
