The left-back was having an excellent campaign in the Premier League after joining Newcastle United on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt.
However, the season has been ended early after Willems suffered a cruciate ligament injury in their 1-0 win over Chelsea at the weekend. Willems is out for 6-9 months.
Newcastle United were considering making the loan move permanent but the injury now puts doubts in that deal. It also ends any chances of Willems being part of the Netherlands squad for the Euros next summer.
