France beat Netherlands home and away during the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup which they went on to eventually win in Russia. However, Janmaat, who is currently joint top of the Premier League with Watford, believes Oranje can get something in Paris.
He told VI, “If you can be on top of the Premier League with Watford … Look at international football. Then you notice that you can make it difficult for any opponent. You need to compensate for less quality with a good plan and a good way of playing. I never see results of 6-0 or so. That means that there are always opportunities, also against France. They have become world champion, yes, incredibly nice, but did you see them during the World Cup against Australia? They won that match with good luck. Australia had a plan and a way of playing that France had difficulty with. Let that be an example for us.
“Of course it will be difficult and they will have many more world-class players than we do. But Oranje has a talent for it, combined with a bit more experience and a clear way of playing. Then it’s up to us, the players. What could be nicer than being able to play football against the world champion in Paris and to confirm that we are on the right track with the Dutch national team? I can not think of anything. Such matches are the best to play.”
This is how the Oranje should line up against France in a 1-5-3-2 formation. Cilessen- Janmaat, De Light, Van Dijk, Ake, Van Arnholt- De Jong, Wijnaldum, Van Der Beek- Depay, Promes . France’s forte is the speed and quickness of her midfield not discounting Dembele and Mbappe’s. The Dutch should sit back and force the French TO POSSESS the Ball, something they do not do very well since they rely on their speed to counterattack. Most teams who have lost to France made the mistake of playing attacking football and possessing the ball in their half which is like suicide with the kind of strikers they have.
