janssen neth poThe 21-year-old was the top scorer in the Eredivisie last season with 27 goals in 34 games for AZ Alkmaar, and has staked his claim to become the new undisputed number nine for the Dutch national team. Janssen netted in the 2-1 win over Poland last week and followed it up with another in the 2-0 win over Austria on Saturday.

Speaking to Fox Sports after the game, Janssen reflected on the match and the last two weeks with the national team, “I got a good cross from Steven Berghuis and knocked it in on purpose. Luckily the goalkeeper could not reach it. I’m glad I’ve been given the trust and started three games in a row. If you can then end up with two goals and two wins, you might talk about two successful weeks.

“I intend to be in the starting XI when we return to the national team in September. Then the World Cup qualifying campaign starts and we’ll see who there is in the striker role, but I think I’ve shown that I belong there.”

Janssen has been linked with a move away from AZ, with clubs from Netherlands, England and Germany all being linked in the media. The forward is hoping to make a move this summer, “I want to make a step, that is clear, but there is no white smoke just now.

“England? We will see. Maybe something will happen in the holidays. I will take my phone with me anyway.”
