Decossaux was part of the talks with Blind on Sunday which ultimately ended with the coach being sacked after two years in charge. The Commercial director then faced the media.

Decossaux said, ”We spoke to Danny Blind this afternoon. We initially saw an upward curve with Danny Blind but lately that was not the case and we felt we needed to take action with a decision. We must not look back but forward.

”We appreciated Danny Blind as a player and a person. He is naturally disappointed with the decision we have taken.

”The players are aware of the situation and they understand. They are used to these types of changes being made at club level.

”Fred Grim immediately agreed to take the reigns for the match against Italy on Tuesday.

On Blinds replacement, Decossaux said, ”We have ideas and contigency plans in place in terms of finding a replacement manager for the national team. We want to resolve the manager position as quickly as possible.”

On whether a foreign coach is a possibility, he added, “All options are options,”

Decossaux said they are aiming to have the new boss in charge for when Luxembourg visit Amsterdam in June.
