The former head of the Arsenal academy took charge of the Bundesliga side in February but Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Stuttgart has led to Wolfsburg’s board sacking Jonker and immediately replacing him with former Mainz boss Martin Schmidt.

Jonker won only five of his 16 Bundesliga games in charge of Wolfsburg and becomes the first coaching casualty of the new season in the Bundesliga.

He leaves behind Dutchmen Paul Verghaegh, Riechedly Bazoer and Jeffrey Bruma who will now look to impress their new boss.
