Van Basten earned 54 caps for the national team as a player, and coached Netherlands in a four year stint between 2004 and 2008, leading them to the Euro 2008 semi-finals. Now the 50-year-old is back with the national team as Danny Blind’s assistant, after deciding to leave his position at AZ Alkmaar.
On the appointment Van Basten said, “I’m really looking forward to this interesting job and also look forward to the renewed collaboration with Danny Blind,”
“I had to make a difficult choice, because the role at AZ was to my liking. Blind convinced me of the challenge of the national team.”
Van Basten will now look to help his former Ajax assistant Danny Blind in leading Netherlands to Euro 2016. The Oranje currently sit third in Group A with only four games remaining, starting with ties against Iceland and Turkey in September.
