The 1st round of the KNVB Cup got underway on Tuesday with several ties including wins for Groningen, Heerenveen and Excelsior. 

veerman-eeHeerenveen (AET) 5-1 De Graafschap

Heerenveen needed extra time to see off De Graafschap in Friesland. The hosts missed a first half penalty before Elsio van Overbeek put the away side into a surprise lead just after the hour mark. However, with five minutes left Henk Veerman drew Heerenveen level and the Eredivisie side run riot in extra-time. Veerman added his second three minutes into extra time before Arber Zeneli, Younes Namli and Stijn Schaars all scored to make it 5-1 at the end.

Capelle 0-4 Groningen

Groningen eased into the second round after a comfortable win over amateur side Capelle. Danny Hoesen calmed any nerves by opening the scoring after only ten minutes and Tom van Weert quickly added a second. In the second half Hans Hateboer added a third before Alexander Sørloth netted his first goal of the season with ten minutes left.

IJsselmeervogels 3-1 Achilles’29

Eerste Divisie side Achilles’29 were on the end of one of the biggest shocks of the night after they were stunned by amateur side IJsselmeervogels. Goals from Grot, Akla and van Hussen gave the hosts a comfortable 3-0 lead before Boogers pulled one back late on.

Kozakken Boys 3-0 Helmond Sport

Eerste Divisie side Helmond Sport were also knocked out by an amateur opponents with Kozakken Boys easing to a 3-0 win. The Werkendam side comfortably blew Helmond away thanks to goals from Igancio, Stout and Pires Tavarez.

NAC 0-2 VVV

In a clash between two strong Eerste Divisie sides it was VVV Venlo who came out on top in Breda thanks to a first half double by attacker Torino Hunte.

Volendam (p) 3-3 MVV 

Volendam came back from 2-0 and 3-1 down to book their place in the next round on penalties. Jack Tuijp netted a hat-trick for the hosts to take the tie into extra time after Pedro, Verheijdt and Schroijen had scored for MVV. Florian Loshaj missed in the penalty shootout to send Volendam into the next round.

Barendrecht 0-1 Excelsior

Excelsior are safely in the next round after a narrow win over their amateur opponents. Nigel Hasselbaink netted the only goal of the game after latching onto a defensive error on 26 minutes.

Den Bosch 2-3 FC Eindhoven

On-loan PSV striker Rai Vloet was the hero for FC Eindhoven as his late goal saw his new side book their place in the next round. Mart Lieder had twice given FC Eindhoven the lead only for Den Bosch to fight back twice thanks to goals from Havar and Bilite, but Vloet struck with two minutes left to ensure victory for the visitors.
