Vitesse only made three changes from the side that drew 1-1 with VVV Venlo at the weekend, but without ill coach Henk Fraser, they struggled against the Amsterdam bases amateurs.
The visitors dominated from the start but Milot Rashica shot two good chances over the bar, while Luc Castaignos brought out a great save by Bogdan Constantin. Thomas Bruns nearly broke the deadlock just before the break but he saw his effort cleared off the line.
As the second half wore on, Vitesse looked more nervous and substitute Tim Matavz couldn’t prevent the game from heading to extra-time and then penalties.
Alexander Buttner missed the first Vitesse penalty and that proved to be fatal as AVV Swift netted all of theirs to cause a huge upset.
