Excelsior has progressed to the KNVB Cup third round after a 2-0 victory over PEC Zwolle.

After an indifferent start to their Eredivisie campaign, PEC Zwolle were hoping for a cup run. They headed to face Excelsior, who sit 12th in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie.

John Stegeman’s side had the better chances in the first-half but Pelle Clement struck the bar with a header, while Mike van Duinen put a chance wide.

In the 63rd minute, Excelsior took the lead with Thomas Oude Kotte finding the net with a cross. Ahmad Mendes Moreira then sealed the win for Excelsior with a low strike into the bottom corner.

PEC Zwolle are out but Excelsior progress to the next round.
