Sparta Rotterdam are the first Eredivisie side out of the competition after they went down 1-0 at Eerste Divisie side RKC. Sparta dominated the first half but couldn’t find the opening goal and RKC made them pay in the 63rd minute. Dylan Seys, fresh of the bench fired the hosts into the lead and despite piling forward, Sparta couldn’t find an equaliser.
MVV 2-3 AZ
Wout Weghorst netted a double as AZ Alkmaar scraped into the next round with a 3-2 win at MVV Maastricht.
John van den Brom named a near full strength side with Pantelis Hatzidiakos for Ron Vlaar the only change. On seven minutes, AZ Alkmaar took the lead through the Greek centre back who swiveled in the penalty area before firing into the net.
MVV responded well from falling behind and eventually they equalised on 34 minutes through Samy Mmaee. However, two minutes before the break, Alireza Jahanbakhsh’s cross reached Wout Weghorst at the back post and he slid the ball into the net to restore AZ’s lead.
AZ failed to kill the game in the second half and Mmaee netted his second of the game to once again equalise for MVV. With eight minutes to go, Weghorst was the match winner as he headed another Alireza Jahanbakhsh cross into the net to secure AZ’s progression.
