Heerenveen netted three goals in the last ten minutes as they defeated 10-man Feyenoord 4-3 to reach the semi-finals of the KNVB Cup.

Feyenoord were aiming for the KNVB Cup as their last chance to seal a trophy this season, and also to help ease their financial issues.

However, it was Heerenveen who had the lead in the 15th minute as Rani Kaib netted from a Mitchell van Bergen cross.

Heerenveen thought they had doubled their lead before the break but Henk Veerman’s goal was chalked off for offside.

Two minutes into the second half, Feyenoord did level as Bryan Linssen diverted a Jens Toornstra effort into the net.

Heerenveen were then awarded a penalty, but Nick Marsman made up for his foul by keeping out Joey Veerman’s spot kick before Eric Botteghin cleared the rebound off the line.

In the 57th minute, Feyenoord took the lead with Steven Berghuis finding the net, and it seemed the Rotterdammers were going to ease to victory when Lutsharel Geertruida added a third.

However, it all went wrong for Feyenoord when Berghuis was sent off in the 66th minute for a second yellow card.

Feyenoord kept Heerenveen out until the 81st minute as Benjamin Nygren netted after Henk Veerman’s effort hit the post. Heerenveen then equalised through Siem de Jong, who also popped up in the 88th minute with the winning goal.

It is Heerenveen that progresses to face Ajax in the semi-final.
