Both sides went into the game joint top of the Eredivisie, and it seemed nothing was going to separate the sides during the game which was heading for extra time until Karim El Ahmadi’s free kick was deflected into the net by Joel Veltman with the last kick of the game.
Ajax had the better of the first half at De Kuip with Riechedly Bazoer winning the battle in midfield, but it wasn’t until the half hour mark that a chance was created. A ball over the top found Daley Sinkgraven who set up Viktor Fischer, but the attacker’s shot was well kept out by Kenneth Vermeer. The Feyenoord goalkeeper also had to be alert before the end of the first half to turn Amin Younes shot wide, while Sinkgraven also shot just past the post.
After the break the game turned on its head as Feyenoord took control and through Simon Gustafson they got two great chances, but the Swedish midfielder sent too shots off target. The end of the game was plagued by pushing and shoving between the two teams and it seemed the game was heading for a stalemate until Veltman put the ball into his own net.
Feyenoord now move into the last 16.
Not sure what game you were watching, but Feyenoord was the better team all day. They had the ball in Ajax’s half most of the time and looked the better team while doing it. If they would have shot better they could have had 3 or 4 goals. Kramer, Kuyt, Elia, and Gust look dangerous together. I really like that group.
In the end it was a typical game between the long time rivals. Close and hard fought. We get to see it again in about 10 days!
A draw would have been a fair result for the regular game and would have treated us with another 30 minutes of football. The way Feyenoord scored was lucky as well, but perhaps they wanted it more in the second half, thus deserving qualification for the next round more than Ajax.
