Vitesse went into the cup clash looking for some confidence after failing to win in their last three league games.
Within the first two minutes, Excelsior’s Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill was lucky not to see a red card for a rash challenge. VAR did not intervene and only a yellow was shown.
Vitesse came the closest to breaking the deadlock in the first-half but Armando Broja hit the woodwork. The post also denied Openda in the second-half.
Eventually, Vitesse did have the ball in the net through Broja but this time VAR did intervene and it spotted that the ball was not totally stationary when Riechedly Bazoer took a free-kick in the build-up.
It appeared extra-time was going to be needed but in the 90th minute, Openda found the bottom corner to seal Vitesse’s spot in the last four of the cup.
