First up was VVV Venlo against PEC Zwolle, with the Eerste Divisie side hoping to cause an upset. However their chances were dealt a blow after only 12 minutes when in-form Tomas Necid slotted in Bart van Hintum’s pass from close range.
VVV Venlo never threatened to cause an upset, and only poor finishing stopped PEC Zwolle from extending their lead and making the victory more comfortable.
The second tie on Tuesday was an all Eredivisie affair with Cambuur comfortably knocking out Heracles 3-0 in Almelo despite going down to ten men.
Mohamed El Makrini opened the scoring after only 14 minutes with a brilliant strike, but ten minutes later Cambuur were reduced to ten men when Lucas Bijker was shown a straight red for pulling down Thomas Bruns.
However Heracles could not make the extra man count, and goals from El Makrini and Calvin Mac-Intosch sealed a rather simple win for Cambuur.
