Ajax returned to the Olympic Stadium for the first time since they left for the Amsterdam Arena in 1996 as they beat amateur side JOS Watergraafsmeer 9-0 thanks to six goals from striker Arek Milik. The Polish striker was joined on the scoresheet by Lucas Andersen, Ricardo Kishna and debutante Queensy Menig in an easy win for Frank de Boer’s men.
The big game of the night was played in Deventer as struggling Feyenoord faced Go Ahead Eagles, but there was too be no joy for the under pressure boss Fred Rutten as the home side came out on top 2-0. After only three minutes Jules Reimerik opened the scoring, and although Feyenoord dominated possession they could not find an equaliser and with a few minutes left Jop van der Linden fired a free kick past Kenneth Vermeer to heap the misery on the Rotterdam side. Out of the cup and in the bottom three of the Eredivisie, where to now for Fred Rutten?
Holders PEC Zwolle scraped into the next round after an unconvincing 3-2 win over Eerste Divisie side Oss. Jesper Drost gave the home side the lead, but Ricky Stuy van den Herik equalised for Oss before half time. Tomas Necid and Drost’s second of the game sealed PEC Zwolle’s progress in the second half despite Oss netting a second through Istvan Bakx.
Groningen eased into the net round after a 4-1 win over Barendrecht with Danny Hoesen, Michael de Leeuw, Nick van der Velden and Jarchinio Antonia netting the goals.
Twenty-two year-old midfielder Sebastian Steblecki netted twice on his debut to help Cambuur hammer Eerste Divisie side Den Bosch 4-0. Mart Dijkstra and Martijn Barto completed the scoring.
Thom Haye gave AZ a 1-0 win over EVV,a Daryl Van Mieghem double eased Excelsior past AFC, and there was also a win for Eredivisie’s bottom side Heracles who scraped past HBS 2-1.
