PEC Zwolle are through to their third KNVB Cup final after a 2-1 victory over NEC Nijmegen at the IJsseldelta Stadion.

pec v necAfter a cagey opening period, PEC Zwolle took the lead on 29 minutes when Jesper Drost found the bottom corner with a low effort from just outside the box.

Zwolle defender Joost Broerse then came close to making it 2-0 with a long range free kick that was brilliantly kept out by NEC Nijmegen keeper Dennis Gentenaar.

Five minutes before the break NEC equalised when a free kick was not cleared by Zwolle and Kevin Conboy found the net with a smart finish from close range.

The game seemed to be heading for extra time when PEC Zwolle found the winner on 81 minutes in a moment that will haunt NEC goalkeeper Dennis Gentenaar for a long time. PEC Zwolle defender Maikel van der Werff hit a speculative long range effort which seemed simple for Gentenaar, but the ball squirmed under his body and ended up in the back of the net.

It will be PEC Zwolle’s third ever KNVB Cup final, and they will be hoping it will be third time luck after losing their last two attempts in 1928 and 1977. They will face the winner of the 2nd semi final between AZ Alkmaar and Ajax.
