Ajax have been knocked out of the KNVB Cup on penalties by FC Twente after a 1-1 draw in the Grolsch Veste.

Gertjan Verbeek set up Twente to frustrate Ajax with five defenders but it didn’t work in the early stages as Frenkie de Jong was given space to drive the visitors forward.

Matthijs de Ligt got the first chance of the game but his fierce strike from distance was well kept out by Joel Drommel. On 18 minutes the opener did come from Justin Kluivert in spectacular fashion. The winger jinked past a defender on the left wing before curling a great strike into the top corner.

Ajax continued to push forward but Kasper Dolberg couldn’t convert a great chance after being set up by Kluivert. At the other end, Mitchell Dijks was lucky not to give a penalty away for a clumsy challenge, while Danny Holla tested Andre Onana.

Kluivert continued to cause plenty of problems for Twente right-back Hidde ter Avest early in the second half and he was inches away from netting a second. Gertjan Verbeek saved Ter Avest by substituting the defender and gradually Twente grew into the game with Tom Boere going close with a header.

Marcel Keizer decided to switch Frenkie de Jong and Kluivert for Siem de Jong and Luis Orejuela but the substitutions didn’t have the desired effect. David Neres was denied by Drommel at close range while Siem de Jong sent a shot just wide.

In injury time, Oussama Assaidi earned Twente a draw, jinking past Siem de Jong before hammering a shot past a rooted Onana from outside the area.

Drommel kept Ajax out in extra time with excellent saves to deny Hakim Ziyech and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to force penalties. Onana saved from Tighadouini but Ziyech then skied his spot kick. It was De Ligt who missed in sudden death with Drommel keeping out the defenders effort to send Twente into the next round.

Ajax now only have the league to concentrate on now while Twente progress to the last eight.
