All eyes in Eindhoven were on Marco van Ginkel, who was thrust in the starting line-up after his deadline day move from Chelsea, and the midfielder came the closest to scoring early on in the tie but he was denied by Robbin Ruiter.
Against the run of play Utrecht took the lead on 32 minutes with Bart Ramselaar firing past Jeroen Zoet after PSV failed to clear a corner. Just before the break Sebastien Haller stunned the home crowd with a mazy run and finish to double Utrecht’s lead.
PSV failed to react to a confident looking Utrecht in the second half and after a few missed chances, Ramselaar eventually made it 3-0 just before the hour mark, racing onto a Haller pass before beating Jetro Willems and slotting past Zoet.
With 16 minutes left Hector Moreno netted from a corner to pull one back and PSV pushed forward looking for another but Luuk de Jong saw a penalty appeal turned down before Florian Jozefzoon volleyed an excellent chance wide from close range.
Utrecht now go into the semi-finals along with Feyenoord, AZ and VVSB. PSV now have to concentrate on the league, with their next match away to Utrecht this Sunday.
A shocker. Not a good début for Van Ginkel methinks. Too bad for him as he will never be the player he could have been. He’s lost critical developmental years through injury and lack of playing. I saw him play in the US for Chelsea and he showed so much promise but became just a bench player. Horrible decision to go there(Chelsea) at such a young age. And Vitesse is as much to blame. As for today didn’t see the game but I guess it happens. But when you supposedly have much more talent/depth and at home you should try and annihilate your opponent. See what Barca did to Valencia yesterday. They not only have the most talent they show NO MERCY. The fact is the next generation of Dutch players may have some great promise but for whatever reason they lack that mental prowess the previous generations have had. Too bad. Hope Marco can turn it around and become a decent regular player.
