The game had to be rearranged for Wednesday due to the snow that fell in the Netherlands last week. Both sides knew the winner would go on to face Vitesse Arnhem in the next round.
VVV took the lead just after the twenty minute mark with Georgios Giakoumakis firing his side ahead. It was his 25th goal of the season.
VVV couldn’t build on their lead and the hosts managed to force extra-time with Rangelo Janga finding the corner in the second half to level for NEC.
In the first-half of extra-time, Meritan Shabani netted the winner for VVV on his debut for the club. He was loaned from Wolves in January and found the net after being set up by Giakoumakis.
VVV now heads into the semi-final for a clash with Vitesse Arnhem.
